Jewel Of Ava A Precious Gem

Jan 15, 2014

Recent Newcastle city prize money winner Jewel Of Ava has given patient owners, Mr Delic and his mate Mr Healy something to smile about when their smart 3yo Beautiful Crown filly greeted the judge in the TOOHEYS HANDICAP 900m sprint in the city class event.

Ridden a treat by the very capable Serg Lisnyy, as the gates flew back the filly was near the back of the field sitting 6th in a field of 9 and looking like the 30-1 odds could have been a bit of under's, in an event that if you snooze you loose, even with 300m to go Jewel Of Ava had slipped back to second last and any one on track that may have been tempted to back the filly were beginning to roll their ticket up to throw it basketball fashion at the nearest bin.

However Jewel Of Ava had not read the script, and the beautifully turned out Damien Lane filly was to emerge down the centre of the track at a rate of knots and leaving well credentialed thoroughbreds in her wake as the duo hit the line with the authority of an odds on pop, taking out the handicap event by 0.3 of a length to the favourite Knockabout with a small margin to Trial Ground and rounding out the top four was Audible.

The win was a momentous situation for trainer Damien Lane as it was accredited as his first Metropolitan victory. Damien also passed on praise for the support of the owners who have given horses to him for breaking previously ,he was happy that the owners could pick up such a horse in a sale and take it to the winners circle in only her 4th start, establishing a great rapport between owner and trainer. Damien is hopeful that the connection will bring more success in the future.
